Building Confidence in Machine Sewing

Ref: C3672081

You will learn how to make the sewn components of a feminine hygiene kit which would be suitable for donation to girls in developing countries so they can attend school every week of the month. You will be given guidance and written instructions to enable you to continue to make kits at home, confidently support organisations such as Days for Girls and make a positive difference to the lives of others, empowering women in their communities. You will use a variety of different techniques which are vital to being able to use a sewing machine in many different projects.

Course aim

You will learn how to make a washable feminine hygiene kit (as approved by "Days for Girls") and generally improve your confidence in the core sewing machine skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The ability to thread up and use the basic controls of your sewing machine would be an advantage.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sew in straight and curved lines, turn corners, and reverse.
  • Create a flat, top stitched, curved seam by clipping and trimming
  • Make a simple bag with a drawstring fastening and French seams
  • Make the three types of sewn components of a standard feminine hygiene kit and understand their purpose
  • Explain the positive difference you can make by putting your skills to good use, including supporting women who live in communities where they are denied dignity and rights such as suffrage.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You will need to bring a working sewing machine (and instructions how to use it if required).

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • You could use your skills to support local voluntary organisations or for your own projects.
