Creative Writing: Revenge of the Short Story

The short story is making a comeback - varied, rule-breaking and fun, interest in this once side-lined form is expanding. Writing a compelling short is a craft within itself and sometimes regarded as a ‘dark art’ - Does every word really need to count? When does the story really start? When should it end? We explore the varying forms, cross the genres and consider the outlets. There’s never been a better time to find inspiration and get motivated, if you have an idea for a story - now is the time.

Course aim

Inspire, motivate and encourage students to engage in their own writing by exploring the possibilities offered by various short story formats.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Express an understanding regarding the various form of short story.
  • Gain confidence in one's abilities to comment on, critiquing and/or editing a short story.
  • Draw from own skills and experience in creating a stories of one's own in accordance to one of more of the short story forms covered.
  • Display competence in the development of creative texts which adhere to the short story concept.
  • Have gained motivation and enthusiasm for the subject area.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • There will be short relaxed/informal, non-compulsory homework for each session - this frequently helps students to apply the learning from one session and prepare thoughts for the next.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Students are encouraged to share work but only when ready/if they wish to. Sessions feature a friendly and supportive mix of tutor-led learning, individual and group tasks/discussions/reflection.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A note-book/pad and pen will prove useful.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
