Exploring different cinematic movements from around the globe from British ‘Kitchen Sink’ and Italian Neo-Realism to the U.S, Czech and Japanese New Waves and beyond. What is German Expressionism? Is it really so influential, why does French Cinema du Look divide audiences? Examining key films and stand out directors, whilst charting the evolutionary trends and cultural undercurrents of cinema around the globe.

Course aim

This course allows students to explore the varying works/cinematic trends/movements - past and present from around the globe - increasing their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of film in general.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain a comprehensive knowledge, fresh appreciation & understanding of 'global cinema'.
  • Gain the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to be able to analyse, comment on and/or review a film which embodies a particular 'global trend'.
  • Be able to draw from one's own knowledge and experience in expressing their own informed opinions when commenting on a film produced by a particular nation at a particular time.
  • Gain a confidence in discussing the subject area and in particular any aspects of a nation's cinematic trends which one finds important.
  • Develop a motivation & enthusiasm for international/global cinema and issues rising from it.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A note pad and pen will proove useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • The tutor will issue a 'screening list'/ running order prior to the course start date (available on request).
