Beginners Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice that aims to bring a sense of unity to the experience of the mind and body so that we can become more aware of who we are. There are many different styles of yoga, the yoga taught on this course falls under the broad banner of Hatha Yoga, which is a gentle and meditative form of yoga that is suitable for all. The course will cover basic principles of yoga through practice of posture work, breath work and relaxation. Yoga can help with physical strength and stamina, flexibility and mobility, as well as helping to reduce stress and discomfort and aiding feelings of relaxation. Particular attention will be given to the different curves of the spine and their relationship with the limbs of the body and with the alignment and stability of the joints.

Course aim

To provide a basic introduction to the practice of yoga which is enjoyable,safe and beneficial to students of all abilities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Feel the benefits of a regular yoga practice to overall feelings of well-being.
  • Identify the different curves of the spine and their relationship to each other.
  • Practice postures safely involving the spine in forward bending, back bending, side bending and twists.
  • Improve alignment, stability and posture.
  • Find an appropriate amount of movement in the joints.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Any practice that the student feels able to continue with outside of the classroom will help to build on the techniques that they have learnt and aid with progression.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Questions and feedback are welcomed and there will be time during the sessions for both individual and group discussion.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Mats, blocks and a small number of blankets are provided but students are welcome to bring their own. Warm, comfortable clothing is suitable.
