Just What is - Democracy,Citizenship,Freedom,Equality,Solidarity and Diversity?

Ref: C3529055

Democracy, Citizenship, Freedom, Equality, Solidarity and Diversity are all terms that are bandied about in political debates. These are causes that wars have been fought over and many have died for them; but what do these terms really mean, and what do they mean to us? In this course, we will investigate how these, and other similar words are used, both by those with power and those without. To participate, you need not be widely read, nor possess specialist knowledge. All you need is a willingness to examine your own experience and use of language in the company of others, the wider the range of experiences and backgrounds within the group the more meanings we can discover and examine. You can use this course to help develop the thinking skills required for further study or simply to enjoy stimulating conversation and the realisation that these topics are all open to interpretation and debate, one that you can take part in.

Course aim

• To appreciate the diverse meanings of these commonly used terms. • To understand the assumptions and different perspectives behind them. • To take part as an equal in discussions about these terms.
