Papercraft and Printing - Make and decorate your own book

During this course students will learn some basic techniques and knowledge on how to make paper; how to create a 3d paper mache object; make paper from silk fibres; create a simple book; make and use a simple printing block; use found objects to print with; learn how to make and use a simple stencil, how to make textured papers and how to make an altered book.

Course aim

This course will give an introduction to a range of simple papermaking, printing, paper mache and bookmaking techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recycle unwanted paper to make new sheets of paper.
  • Make paper from silk fibres.
  • Create coloured and textured papers.
  • Make a simple book and know how to make an altered book.
  • Make and use my own simple printing block and stencil.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will have a selection of samples of your work, together with relevant handouts

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided but it would be useful if you could bring a book with blank pages to keep samples in plus pen, pencil, rubber and scissors.
