A Brief History of Life

A dayschool led by Dr Joe Botting. Life on Earth has a long and complicated history, as revealed through the fossil record and molecular biology. Some time periods are better known than others and its is difficult to put everything into the correct context. Aspects covered will be the rise of oxygen, the Cambrian Explosion, mass extinctions, and the origins and diversifications of major groups of organisms, supported by paleontological specimens from critical sites around the world.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to how life has evolved and diversified through geological time and how it changed the Earth in the process.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise how life has evolved and diversified through geological time.
  • Describe how it has changed the Earth in the process.
  • Recognise different time periods and put them into context.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a notebook and pen.
