West African Drumming

We will play traditional drumming rhythms on a range of instruments. This class is aimed a complete beginners and we will learn fundamental skills and techniques to build confidence and to play music in a group with other people.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to West African drumming

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make the bass tone and slap sounds on a djembe
  • Play simple accompaniments on a djembe
  • Play bass drum and bell parts for a traditional rhythm piece
  • Recognise and play the 'call' phrase on the djembe
  • Know and understand the cultural background of the rhythm we are playing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
