Beginners ~ Upcycling & Recycling using Mosaic

During this course learners will be encouraged to create mosaics using recycled or up-cycled materials. This could include broken crockery or old kitchen tiles to create the pattern of the mosaic. It could also include the base on which to put the mosaic. Past projects have included small tables and cabinets found in charity shops, or old vases, lamp bases or garden tools!

Course aim

To provide a foundation for the principles of making mosaics specifically using recycled or discarded materials.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the suitability of recycled materials used for making mosaics.
  • Be informed about international and local mosaic artists who use recycled materials.
  • Understand the mosaic term Pique-Assiette and be able to create a mosaic in this style.
  • Be able to cut and shape a variety of materials used to make mosaics.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
