Tai Chi and Health Qigong for Health and Relaxation Level 2

Practising Tai Chi is a beneficial way to exercise by combining both body movement and mental stimulation. It also helps posture, balance and co-ordination. The gentle and slow movements energise the body without undue strain on joints and muscles. Exploring the many health benefits of Qigong will hep to relieve stress and tension and increase a sense of well being.

Course aim

To continue maintaining fitness, aid relaxation and improve techniques and performance of Tai Chi as well as continue to understand and explore the health principles of the Qigong sets.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for people who have 12 months plus recent experience of 24 Yang styl Tai Chi.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • continue to demonstrate a better understanding of the principles of Yang style Tai Chi.
  • develop a good grasp of timing, posture and transitions, in particular the final transitions of the 24 form.
  • demonstrate improvement in body weight transfer and body shape.
  • continue to perform the Health Qigong sets with an understanding of the background and health benefits of the forms as well as to improve the Tai Ji Yang Sheng Zhang. (stick).
  • demonstrate how to breathe correctly in the new forms which will have been recently introduced

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to question and explore the movements and the health benefits. You will be encouraged to continue learning about the cultural background.

What else do I need to know?

  • Loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Flat soft comfortable footwear. You may wish to bring a drink. A Taiji Stick will be available to purchase or borrow.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Books and videos are not essential but may be purchased through the tutor if requested.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Continued practice will help maintain levels of fitness and many health benefits, including social interaction.
