The Renaissance meant a rebirth of classical culture. What did this mean for Italian painters and sculptors in the fifteenth century? And how did giants like Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo emerge?

Course aim

The main purpose of the course is to understand the development of Italian Renaissance art in the fifteenth century; to establish its central themes and to locate the key artists and sculptors in their context.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is for all those who are interested in art and enjoy the pleasure of looking. Really, no previous experience will be needed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the work of some Italian Renaissance painters and sculptors
  • Recognise some of the main themes of the period, e.g. the importance of perspective and the humasn figurre
  • Recognise aome of the materials used by the painters and sculptors.
  • Recognise what features of renaissance painting and sculpture made for a new naturalism

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The power point presentation will offer opportunities for discussion and debate.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • Feedback will be throught mid and end of course reviews.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • However, any advance reading is always useful, 'the Story of Art' by Ernst Gombrich is recommended especially the relevant chapters.
