Gardening Appreciation

This course will provide a brief history of the English garden starting with the Roman villa garden in Britain through to the modern roof gardens of today. The course will look at the different periods of gardens to include medieval, Tudor, Dutch parterres, the landscape movement, Victorian garden and Dig for Victory garden. We will asses the design, plants for each period and famous designers.

Course aim

To look at the different designs of gardens in Britain from the Romans through to the present day.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name a number of famous garden designers
  • Assess the Roman garden in Britain and any impact
  • Explain why the English landscape movement evolved
  • Assess the impact of new introductions upon the Victorian garden
  • Discuss the new ideas coming from Europe during the 17th century

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
