Life Drawing and Painting - Saturday Day School

Ref: C3671493

We will learn to show the structure of the figure while making drawings that express an individual response to the vitality of the human form. You will be encouraged to use a variety of drawing and painting materials.

Course aim

To learn to draw the figure with a view to developing structure and form in all other aspects of art and design

Who is the course for?

Some experience of drawing is desirable but no experience of life drawing is necessary. Beginners are very welcome.

What topics will this course cover

The course will cover how to understand the stance of the model as well as how to express mass in drawing. Students will be encouraged to make their own individual response to the figure through learning to see in new ways. We will work with both long and short poses with some unconventional media (for example, bamboo sticks) as well as more traditional media such as pencils and charcoal. You will be encouraged to make detailed drawings as well as using a broader more expressive ways of working.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Demonstrate use of form and structure in your drawings Experiment with different materials and ways of working Make a drawing demonstrating planes Make a drawing demonstrating design Take part in discussion if you are able

How will I know I'm making progress?

I will show students how to improve by looking at their work individually and as a group throughout the course. I will also give feedback in the same way.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Please bring your own drawing materials. Some A 1 sized white paper will be available. But you may need more so bring a few sheets of A1 or A 2. There are some easels and drawing boards available and are on a 'first come first served basis', so bring your own if you have them just in case.

Reading and information sources

No reading or preparation is necessary.

What could the course lead to?

Your drawings could be used as part of your work for applying to college or as a support for ongoing projects at college. It should also encourage those that find it hard to work outside of art courses to begin that process, as well as giving you a taste of what you could achieve on further life drawing or other art courses.
