This 10 week course will give an introduction to several textile techniques and materials and is suitable for anyone with an interest in learning about textiles. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary.

Course aim

This course aims to give introduce students to a range of textile techniques and materials.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

Topics covered on this course are Collage, feltmaking, yarn wrapping and weaving, rag rug work, knitting with more than wool, fabric dyeing, silk painting, batik, hand stitching, machine stitching.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Select an image as a basic design to work from. 2. Use fabrics to create a rag rugwork image. 3. Operate a sewing machine to create stitch samples. 4. Make felt from fleece. 5. Create samples to demonstrate a range of hand stitches.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will be given individual feedback and suggestions for idea development relevant to their progress and ability throughout the course.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Materials will be provided but it would be useful if students could bring a book with blank pages to keep samples in plus pen, pencil, rubber and scissors.

No reading or preparation is essential
