During this course students will learn how to use a sewing machine, use Bondaweb both when recycling fabric scraps and with applique, how to print onto fabric, learn a simple patchwork technique and learn a selection of hand sewing stitches

Course aim

This course is intended to provide an introduction to a selection of hand and machine sewing techniques as well as how to print onto fabric.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Identify parts of a sewing machine and their functions and produce a set of stitch samples. 2. Use Bondaweb both for recycling fabric scraps and applique. 3. Use water soluble fabric. 4. Produce a set of hand stitch samples. 5. Produce a sample of patchwork.

How will I know I'm making progress?

regular verbal feedback from the tutor.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A blank sketchbook to keep samples and record information; writing kit (pen, pencil, eraser, scissors, ruler), apron to protect clothes when working with materials and a basic sewing kit. A sewing machine would be useful but the tutor can provide some if necessary.

Reading and information sources

No reading is necessary but students may bring books or images to the classes for inspiration.
