This course will offer students an introduction to using a sewing machine who will also make an apron or cushion project. The course will also offer a range of skills to students who would like to progress in more detailed projects such as garment making or soft furnishings.

Course aim

to provide the skills and knowledge required to make simple projects for students new to sewing and to continue increasing skills and knowledge for students who wish to make more progress with projects in more detail.

What topics will this course cover

An introduction to the sewing machine for new students Pattern reading skills - understanding the contents of the pattern How to choose and handle fabric Finding out about machine feet and needles Measuring for accuracy Cutting out patterns and construction techniques Making a project within your skill level

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Demonstrate how to set up and use a sewing machine. 2. Demonstrate how to cut out a project accurately using precise measurements 3. Demonstrate where and how you would support fabric 4. Demonstrate how to read a pattern envelope to obtain the correct information 5. Demonstrate how to follow a pattern from a pattern sheet

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will be given verbal feedback at every lesson and written feedback on assessment sheets and ILP's

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Students new to sewing will bring a sewing kit i.e. scissors, pins, tape measure, various coloured thread and some fabric to practice sewing on. Patterns for aprons will be provided by tutor. Returning students or students with existing skills will bring a sewing kit, project patterns and suitable fabric. Your own sewing machine would be an advantage but not essential as some machines are provided.

Reading and information sources

No reading or preparation is required or desirable.

What could the course lead to?

Skills learned on this course will lead the student in to more detailed studies and could lead to community involvement or self employment.
