Bring in your manuscripts whether finished or half written. This practical course is aimed at supporting you to develop a finished novel for presentation to agents and publishers.

Course aim

To encourage a nurturing and supportive group dynamic. To initiate a professional approach to writing and encourage students to adopt the discipline and commitment to ensure that they are able complete a novel. To assist students to critique their own and other’s work. To have a clear goal to complete their novel within a given timeframe. To ensure students understand the requirements for submitting their MSS to agents/publishers. To engender confidence and determination in order that students persevere to submit their work to agents and publishing houses.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who is writing or has completed a novel

What topics will this course cover

The course is specifically for people who are writing or have finished a novel. During the course you will learn how to layout your manuscript correctly, write a covering letter to agents, compose a synopsis and gain an understanding of how to present a final draft to agents and publishers.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Layout their manuscript correctly 2. Create a title for their novel 3. Edit their MSS effectively 4. Write a synopsis 5. Write a covering letter to a publisher/agent

How will I know I'm making progress?

Each student will receive feedback and editing suggestions, given by the group members, and the tutor. At the end of every session, each student fills in a Personal Achievement form, to which the tutor will add comments and suggestions in order to have a dialogue with the tutor and to help them improve their writing.
