Develop Your Novel

A course to help edit, structure and enhance your story, with guides to help progress key scenes, develop plot and improve tense, point of view and dialogue. You will receive encouraging feedback from the group to assist you to advance your novel towards completion.

Course aim

To initiate a professional approach to writing and encourage students to adopt the discipline and commitment to ensure that they are able complete a novel. To assist students to critique their own and other’s work. To have a clear goal to complete their novel within a given timeframe. Be able to explain their novel's plot coherently. To improve students’ understanding of the correct use of Show & Tell, key scenes, viewpoint and dialogue, and how to apply this to their own work.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who has started writing a novel.

What topics will this course cover

The course is specifically for people who have begun to write a novel. During the course you will gain a better understanding of viewpoint, dialogue and key scenes, and submit your work to be reviewed by the group.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Write copy for the back cover 2. Improve POV and Tense 3. Create character specific dialogue 4. Demonstrate the use of ‘Show’ as opposed to ‘Tell’ in a key scene 5. Write effectual Key Scenes 6. Layout dialogue correctly

How will I know I'm making progress?

Each student will receive feedback and editing suggestions, given by the group members, and the tutor. At the end of every session, each student fills in a Personal Achievement form, to which the tutor will add comments and suggestions in order to help them improve their writing.

Pen & paper No class on 31.03.16 or 07.04.16
